Composite bonding on bottom teeth

Yes, composite bonding can be done on bottom teeth. The deciding factor is your bite: how your top and bottom teeth meet. 3Dental says lower-teeth bonding is possible but the patient's bite and how the top and bottom teeth meet have to be considered first (3Dental), and South Dublin SmileHub says grinding can rule it out because the composite would not be strong enough (SmileHub). In our own gallery, Niamh had crowded lower edges reshaped and levelled (see the case).

Key points

Why the bite matters more on bottom teeth

When you close, the edges of your lower front teeth meet the back of your upper teeth. Composite added to a lower edge sits right where that contact happens. If the new edge takes the first contact, or the teeth grind against it, it is more likely to chip. Colm Smith Dental lists how the top and bottom teeth bite together as one of the things the dentist must assess before any bonding (Colm Smith Dental).

The research backs the caution: in a seven-year study of front-tooth composite build-ups, chipping or fracture was the main failure and was more frequent in the first year after placement (Lempel et al.).

What it costs

Clinics price bonding per tooth, upper or lower. Across 75 Irish clinics the published range is €125 to €800 and the median is €250 (price survey). Lower front teeth are smaller than upper ones, but ask the clinic how it prices them rather than assuming a discount. Prices in your area: composite bonding near me.

Bottom teeth: questions

Can you get composite bonding on bottom teeth?

Yes, after the dentist checks your bite. Because the lower edges meet the back of the upper teeth when you close, composite there takes more load, so the bite decides whether it will last.

Does composite bonding on bottom teeth chip more easily?

It can, if the new edge takes the first contact when you bite or if you grind. Clinical studies find chipping is the main failure of front-tooth composite and is most common in the first year.

Can I have bonding on my bottom teeth if I grind?

Some clinics say grinding rules bonding out because the composite isn't strong enough. Others fit a custom night guard to protect it. Your dentist decides after checking your teeth.

Should I bond my top and bottom teeth together?

Only if both need it. Some people bond the lower teeth so the shade and shape match the upper ones when they smile or talk. If you whiten, do it before any bonding.

How much is composite bonding on bottom teeth?

It is priced per tooth, the same way as upper teeth: €125 to €800 across 75 Irish clinics, with a median of €250.
