How long does composite bonding last?
Years, not decades, and it depends on where it is and how it's treated. Truly Dental tells patients to expect minor touch-ups after 5 to 6 years (Truly Dental). The largest review of anterior composite restorations found annual failure rates from 0 to 4.1% and survival from 53.4% to 100% across 17 studies, with fracture the main reason for failure (Demarco et al.). Only 2 of the 75 Irish clinics in our survey put a written warranty on it (price survey).

Key points
- Clinic guidance: minor touch-ups after about 5 to 6 years (Truly Dental).
- Research: anterior composites survived 53% to 100% over 3+ years; composite veneers 88% pooled survival in trials of 2 to 8 years.
- Fracture is the main failure. Stain, roughness and colour mismatch are the main complaints.
- Written warranties are rare: Truly Dental 6 years, Boyne Dental 5 years with six-monthly check-ups.
What the studies measured
- Anterior composite restorations. Demarco and colleagues reviewed 17 clinical studies with at least three years of follow-up, 1,821 restorations in all. The total failure rate was 24.1%. Annual failure rates ranged from 0 to 4.1% and survival from 53.4% to 100%. Fracture of the tooth or the restoration was the most common failure; failures of appearance (colour, shape, surface stain) were more frequent when the work had been placed for aesthetic reasons (Demarco et al.).
- Composite veneers specifically. Lim and colleagues pooled randomised trials of resin composite laminate veneers: survival of 88% (95% CI 81% to 94%) with mean follow-up of 24 to 97 months. Direct composite veneers, built in the chair, survived better than indirect lab-made ones. Surface roughness, colour mismatch and marginal discolouration were the most reported complications, and most were judged clinically acceptable with or without a small repair (Lim et al.).
- For comparison, porcelain veneers reached an estimated 95.5% survival at 10 years in a review of 6,500 veneers (Alenezi et al.).
A restoration that "fails" in these studies usually means it chipped, debonded or had to be replaced. Much of the day-to-day wear on bonding, a dulled surface or a stain line at the edge, counts as a complication that a polish or a small repair fixes, not a failure.
What clinics say
Truly Dental: with good hygiene and regular check-ups bonding "can last for many years", and "most patients will require some minor touch ups after 5 to 6 years" to refresh it. It offers a six-year warranty on most bonding, altering or restoring the composite without extra charge in that time (Truly Dental). Boyne Dental guarantees many treatments for five years, subject to six-monthly check-ups and the maintenance the dentist prescribes (Boyne Dental). Those were the only two written guarantees among 75 clinics in our survey; almost every clinic says how long bonding lasts, almost none commits to anything if it doesn't (price survey).
What shortens it
- Biting on it. Edge bonding on the front teeth takes the load every time you bite into something hard. Fracture is the main failure in the studies.
- Grinding and clenching. Night-time grinding chips edges. A night guard is a common recommendation; Shelbourne publishes a bilaminate night guard at €180 (Shelbourne).
- Stain. Tea, coffee, red wine and smoking stain the surface and the margin. Composite isn't glazed the way porcelain is.
- Nail biting, pen chewing, opening packets with your teeth. All of it lands on the bonded edge.
- Skipping the hygienist. Truly Dental recommends six-monthly cleanings to lift stain and keep the bonding looking new.
What extends it
- Whiten before bonding, not after, so the shade is right from the start. Composite doesn't change colour with whitening gel.
- Have the bite checked at the fit appointment. Composite that takes the first contact when you close will chip.
- Keep the six-monthly check-ups, which is also the condition on Boyne Dental's guarantee.
- Treat a small chip early. Adding to existing composite is a quick repair; a lost edge is a rebuild.

What a repair or redo costs
Clinics rarely publish a separate repair price. In practice the dentist either adds resin to the existing bonding, polishes it, or removes and redoes the tooth at the per-tooth bonding price. Published bonding prices run €125 to €800 a tooth in Ireland, median €250 (price survey); the full list is on the cost page. If a clinic offers a warranty, ask what it covers: Truly Dental's covers altering or restoring the composite; Boyne Dental's depends on keeping check-ups.
Questions to ask before you book
- Edge bonding or a full composite veneer on each tooth, and why?
- What do you expect it to look like at five years, and what will you do then?
- Is there a written guarantee, and what are its conditions?
- What does a repair cost, as opposed to a redo?
- Should I wear a night guard?

Lifespan questions
How many years does composite bonding last?
Clinics say to expect touch-ups after about 5 to 6 years (Truly Dental). In clinical studies, anterior composite restorations survived 53.4% to 100% over three years or more, with annual failure rates of 0 to 4.1% (Demarco et al.).
Does composite bonding on front teeth last as long as on back teeth?
Front-tooth bonding takes biting forces on a thin edge, and fracture is the main failure in the studies. Class III fillings on the side of front teeth had lower failure rates than edge and veneer-type restorations in the 2015 review.
What does composite bonding look like after 5 years?
Often slightly duller, with some surface stain and possibly a stain line at the margin. The 2023 meta-analysis listed surface roughness, colour mismatch and marginal discolouration as the most common complications, most of them fixable with a polish or a small repair.
Do Irish clinics guarantee composite bonding?
Rarely. Of 75 clinics in our September 2026 survey, two publish a written guarantee: Truly Dental at six years and Boyne Dental at five, conditional on six-monthly check-ups.
Can composite bonding be repaired?
Yes, usually by adding resin to the existing bonding and polishing it. A tooth that has lost its edge is rebuilt, generally at the clinic's per-tooth bonding price.
