Composite bonding vs veneers: the honest comparison

Composite bonding is resin sculpted onto the tooth in one visit. A porcelain veneer is a thin ceramic shell made in a lab and cemented on, usually after some enamel is removed. In Ireland, bonding is published at €125 to €800 a tooth with a median of €250 (our 2026 survey), while porcelain veneers at the same clinics run from €500 to €1,150 a tooth. Veneers last longer: a 2021 review put the 10-year survival of porcelain veneers at 95.5% (Alenezi et al.).

Key points

What each one is

Composite bonding. The dentist roughens the surface, applies a bonding agent and builds up tooth-coloured resin by hand, then shapes, cures and polishes it. Edge bonding adds material only to the biting edges; a full composite veneer covers the whole front surface. Truly Dental describes it as a single 60 to 90 minute appointment (Truly Dental).

Porcelain veneers. A thin ceramic shell is made in a laboratory from an impression or scan, then bonded to the front of the tooth. Many veneers need a layer of enamel removed so the shell sits flush, which is why dentists call it the less reversible option. The research reviews distinguish feldspathic porcelain from glass-ceramic (lithium disilicate) veneers; glass-ceramic performed better in the 2016 meta-analysis (Morimoto et al.).

Price, at the same clinics

Six Irish clinics that publish both prices, read on 29 October 2026. Per tooth, as published, VAT not stated:

ClinicComposite bondingPorcelain veneer
Truly Dental (Dublin, Bray, Tullamore, Moate) (source)€250–€300 edge bonding, €300–€350 composite veneersFrom €500; hand-made layered from €950
Kiwi Dental, Carlow (source)From €175 (cosmetic bonding)From €750
Boyne Dental, Navan (source)From €275 (bonding/build-ups)From €1,150
Riverforest Dental, Leixlip (source)€300 (cosmetic bonding, composite veneers)€800

Shelbourne Dental Clinic, Dublin (source)€325–€375€1,050

Across the 75 Irish clinics in our survey, bonding runs €125 to €800 a tooth and the median is €250, so six front teeth come to about €1,500 at the median (price survey). At the clinics above, six porcelain veneers would be €3,000 at Truly Dental's starting price and €6,900 at Boyne Dental's. Every bonding price we found, by county, is on the cost page.

How long each lasts

This is where the two separate. The clinical reviews:

Read that as a pattern rather than a promise: porcelain holds its colour and polish for longer; composite is more likely to need a polish, a repair or a redo inside ten years. See how long composite bonding lasts.

What happens when something goes wrong

A chip in composite can usually be repaired by adding more resin in the chair. A chipped or debonded porcelain veneer is typically re-cemented or remade in the lab. Only two of the 75 Irish clinics in our survey publish a written warranty on bonding: Truly Dental at six years and Boyne Dental at five, the latter conditional on six-monthly check-ups (price survey).

Staining and whitening

Neither porcelain nor composite changes colour with whitening gel. Truly Dental's advice is to whiten first, then have the bonding matched to the new shade (Truly Dental). Composite picks up stain at the surface over time, which a hygienist polish usually lifts; porcelain is glazed and resists it.

Tax relief

Revenue's list of non-routine dental treatments that qualify for relief includes veneers and "Rembrandt type etched fillings", while routine fillings don't qualify (Revenue). Form Med 2 lists "Veneers / Etched Fillings" as item B (Med 2). Whether your bonding is certified under that heading is for your dentist to decide on the Med 2. Clinics describe the relief as 20%: Smiles Dental says "a 20% tax rebate" for bridges, crowns, inlays and veneers (Smiles Dental).

Bonding or veneers: questions

Is composite bonding cheaper than veneers?

Yes, by a wide margin. Irish clinics publish bonding at €125 to €800 a tooth, median €250. Porcelain veneers at the same clinics run from €500 (Truly Dental) to €1,150 (Boyne Dental) a tooth (Truly Dental price list, Boyne Dental (Navan) fees).

Do veneers last longer than composite bonding?

In the research, yes. Porcelain veneers had a 10-year survival of 95.5% in a 2021 review of 6,500 veneers (Alenezi et al.); composite veneers had a pooled survival of 88% over 2 to 8 years in a 2023 meta-analysis (Lim et al.).

Does composite bonding damage the tooth?

Less than veneers in most cases. Bonding is added to the surface, often without drilling; porcelain veneers usually need some enamel removed so the shell sits flush. Ask your dentist what your teeth need.

Can I whiten my teeth after bonding or veneers?

Whitening gel doesn't change the colour of composite or porcelain. Truly Dental recommends whitening first and matching the bonding to the new shade.

Can I claim tax back on bonding or veneers?

Veneers and Rembrandt-type etched fillings are on Revenue's list of non-routine treatments; routine fillings are not. Your dentist certifies the treatment on Form Med 2, and clinics describe the relief as 20%.
